usb 3.0 - superspeed usb for embedded systems designs
(1 march 2010)
-
The transition to USB 3.0 or 'SuperSpeed USB' is well underway.
April will see a major developers conference in Taiwan, and the vendor community is both rolling out new USB 3.0 products as well as product development products, especially from the test and measurement community.
This month we take a look at what's new in USB 3.0 and help identify the best web resources for you to join in this fast-developing embedded market opportunity.
vpx and vita 46 - military embedded systems and beyond
(1 february 2010)
-
Does the military lead, or follow, commercial embedded systems? It can be hard to tell - especially in these days when network centric warfare can just as easily describe the 21st century battlefield as it does the struggle to hack into, and prevent hacking, of our international cell phone networks.
VITA and its members have been working hard to bring VME into the 21st century, so this month we take a look at VPX / VITA 46 and how this standard is emerging in the marketplace.
microchip pic vs. ti msp430 vs. atmel avr - happy new year!
(1 january 2010)
-
Three chips.
A new decade.
Many engineers compare and constrast the Atmel AVR, Microchip PIC, and TI MSP430 in their 'design shortlist.' The Microchip PIC is proof that older architectures never really die - they just get better and better with age, proliferating into more and more devices at better price / performance rates.
The Atmel AVR and Texas Instruments MSP430, in contrast, are newer contenders - both targeting the lower end of the market, both adding new and better features for better price points.
All three had some great recent news in 2009, and we also thought it time to identify the best Web starting points as you - the designer - compare and contrast these three alternatives for embedded systems design.
fpga design issues - beyond xilinx and altera fpga design
(1 december 2009)
-
FPGAs are a major focus of embedded systems, these days, and recently there has been a lot of great news from the FPGA community.
Moreover, vendors - both large and small - are making it easier than ever to deploy FPGAs in your next design.
Some, like Avnet, Analog Devices, and Xilinx, are even providing low cost 'development boards' that often are accompanied by real-world training.
Here are the top news highlights for FPGA design.
10gige to 40gige transition via advancedtca (atca)
(6 november 2009)
-
AdvancedTCA, or the ATCA specification as it may be called, remains a promise to be fulfilled, a mystery to be unfolded, a hype to be unhyped.
How much of the buzz around the AdvancedTCA standard is real? How much product is really being shipped? Now we have a new transition: from 10GigE to 40GigE, with AdvancedTCA playing a role in this transition as well.
embedded systems conference - boston - news wrap-up
(1 november 2009)
